Background

Causeway ADHD Support Group was formed in October 2003 as a result of an article printed in a local paper about the difficulties one family were facing regarding their son’s ADHD.  At the end of the article other parents facing similar problems were asked to contact the mother.  The first meeting was held in October 2003 and a committee was formed.  A constitution was drawn up and the group was recognised as a charity by the Inland Revenue in May 2004.  The Management Committee are all parents / carers of young people with ADHD and is supported by has an Advisory Board which consists of professionals from relevant local service providers and organisations.

The group continued to meet on a regular basis with new parents attending the meetings.  These meetings were very helpful to parents as they realised that they were not alone, they were able to share their experiences and empathise with each other.

However the group wanted to be more proactive as they soon realised that there was not enough being done for the children and young people themselves. Numerous applications for funding to various organisations were completed and submitted. Eventually, in March 2008 the group was awarded funding from the Northern Health and Social Services Trust enabling it to run a pilot project for one year.

Since then the project has developed and expanded and we now have 2 full time members of staff and 3 part time members of staff.  See our staff and volunteers page.
